A123 Battery Pack From a 2014 Chevy Spark EV

Well the battery has landed!! It is a A123 battery pack from a 2014 Chevy Spark EV. The 2014 Spark EV was the only year that carried the A123 battery modules. The pack contains 4 modules of 92.4v each with a total of 24 kWh capacity.

Battery Pack with Cover Off

The pack essentially is in three parts 1) the neck, 2) front half, and 3) rear half. The front and rear halves hold 2 battery modules each - in the original car the halves sit fore and aft of the rear axle. The neck of the battery module contains the contactors (high-voltage relay switches) and pre-charger circuit (to protect against voltage in-rush).

I looked at every possible configuration of using Tesla battery modules, but it wasn't going to work. First off Tesla modules are expensive, oddly shaped (for fitting in a previously engine car), and you need a min of 8 (modified modules) or 16 (unmodified) to get to 400v. The modified modules require non-trivial modifications to the HV connections inside the pack.

I will be splitting the neck, front and rear halves of the Spark EV pack into separate parts. The front and rear halves will remain in the modified casing and will sit in the DeLorean's engine bay area.
